Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum: What, Why and How We Support Your Child’s Learning
Through our Early Learning Academies, Cincinnati Union Bethel offers a developmentally appropriate early care and education program. Our program sets goals and creates experiences that are suited to your children’s stages of learning and development. Our learning plans meet children’s learning needs, and also challenge them enough to promote intellectual growth and curiosity.
The most important goal of our early childhood curriculum is to help children become enthusiastic learners. Our child-centered approach encourages children to be active, creative explorers who are motivated and confident enough to try out their own ideas. Research tells us that children learn best through exploring real objects in their environment, as opposed to completing ditto sheets and workbook pages. Cognitive developmental theory developed by Piaget (1896-1980) presents the idea that children actively construct knowledge as they manipulate and explore the world around them. What looks like “just play” is actually the encouragement and support of a child’s learning through their senses. Play enables us to master the key goals of our early childhood curriculum. Play is the work of young children.
Cincinnati Union Bethel uses The Creative Curriculum as the framework for developing teaching strategies. We plan meaningful classroom experiences that are rooted in state and national standards, and inspired by the interests of the children. Parental feedback, formal and informal assessments and a core knowledge of child development guide us to best meet each child’s needs. We couple this approach with supportive, ongoing professional development of staff. Teachers are observed and given feedback concerning their classroom practices at regular, and systematic, intervals. By providing meaningful input through staff development, children are supported to reach higher levels of output, sometimes referred to as school readiness.
The experiences we plan for children, the way we organize the environment, plan the daily schedule, and talk with children, are all designed to accomplish the goals of our curriculum and give your child a successful start in school. We look forward to working with you and building on your child’s sense of wonder to instill a lifelong love for learning!
